Like its sister institution\u00a0EPFL, it is an integral part of the\u00a0Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology Domain (ETH Domain)\u00a0that is directly subordinate to Switzerland&#8217;s\u00a0Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research.\u00a0The school was founded by the\u00a0Swiss Federal Government\u00a0in 1854 with the stated mission to educate engineers and scientists, serve as a national center of excellence in science and technology and provide a hub for interaction between the\u00a0scientific community\u00a0and industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ETH Zurich is currently ranked as 5th best university in the world for the subject of engineering and technology in the\u00a0QS World University Rankings by Subject.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0It is ranked 8th in the world in the 2016 edition of the\u00a0QS World University Rankings, while the QS World University Rankings by Subject has ranked it as the best university in the world for Earth &amp; Marine Sciences in both 2015\/16 and 2016\/17&#8217;s editions.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10651\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10651\" style=\"width: 521px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agence-de-traduction.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ETH-Zurich.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10651\" src=\"https:\/\/agence-de-traduction.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ETH-Zurich.png\" alt=\"ETH Zurich\" width=\"521\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agence-de-traduction.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ETH-Zurich.png 877w, https:\/\/agence-de-traduction.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ETH-Zurich-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/agence-de-traduction.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ETH-Zurich-768x496.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 521px) 100vw, 521px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ETH Zurich<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Faculties:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Architecture and Civil Engineering<\/li>\n<li>Engineering Sciences<\/li>\n<li>Natural Sciences and Mathematics<\/li>\n<li>System-oriented Natural Sciences<\/li>\n<li>Management and Social Sciences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"Student_life\" class=\"mw-headline\">Student life<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ETH students were found to be the busiest students of all institutions of higher education in Switzerland. The undergraduates&#8217; tight curriculum consists of as much as twice the number of lectures as comparable courses of other Swiss universities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ETH has well over 100 student associations. Most notable is the\u00a0VSETH\u00a0(Verband der Studierenden an der ETH) which comprises all department associations. The associations regularly organize events with varying size and popularity. Events of the neighboring University of Z\u00fcrich are well-attended by ETH students and vice versa. The VSETH organizes events of greater public attention, such as the\u00a0Polyball, the\u00a0Polyparty\u00a0(does not exist any more) and the\u00a0Erstsemestrigenfest, the first two housed in the main building of ETH. Sometimes, the annual\u00a0Erstsemestrigenfest\u00a0takes place at extraordinary locations, for example the\u00a0Z\u00fcrich Airport. All freshmen enjoy special treatment at that event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are several student associations, most notable of those are the ETH Entrepreneur Club and ETH Model United Nations. Both organisations enjoy high international standings and are regularly awarded for excellence in their field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0<b>Academic Sports Association of Z\u00fcrich<\/b>\u00a0(ASVZ) offers more than 120 sports.\u00a0The biggest annual sports event is the\u00a0SOLA-Stafette\u00a0(SOLA relay race) which consists of 14 sections over a total distance of 140 kilometers. More than 760 teams participated in the 2009 edition. The 40th edition of the SOLA, held on May 4, 2013, had 900 enrolled teams, of which 893 started and 876 were classified.
