It was founded in 1559 by\u00a0John Calvin\u00a0as a\u00a0theological\u00a0seminary\u00a0and\u00a0law school.\u00a0It remained focused on theology until the 17th century, when it became a center for\u00a0Enlightenment\u00a0scholarship. In 1873, it dropped its religious affiliations and became officially secular.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Today, the university is the third largest university in Switzerland by number of students. In 2009, the University of Geneva celebrated the 450th anniversary of its founding. Amongst others:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Institute for Reformation History\u00a0(the\u00a0Reformation)<\/li>\n<li>Computer Science Department\u00a0(computer science)<\/li>\n<li>Institute for Environmental Sciences\u00a0(energy policy)<\/li>\n<li>The Global Studies Institute<\/li>\n<li>Interfaculty Center of Gerontology\u00a0(gerontology)<\/li>\n<li>Swiss Center for Affective Sciences\u00a0(affective science)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"Associated_institutions\" class=\"mw-headline\">Associated institutions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The university has also several partnerships with the nearby institutions, where students at the university may take courses.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies\u00a0(IHEID)<\/li>\n<li>Bossey Ecumenical Institute<\/li>\n<li>Wyss Center for Bio- and Neuro-engineering<\/li>\n<li>Swiss National Supercomputing Centre<\/li>\n<li>Art-Law Centre<\/li>\n<li>Center for Biomedical Imaging(CIBM)<\/li>\n<li>University Centre of Legal Medicine\u00a0(CURML)<\/li>\n<li>The Institute for Work and Health\u00a0(IST)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"Student_body\" class=\"mw-headline\">Student body<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2016, 16,530 students were studying at UNIGE, of whom 61% were female. 37% of the students were non-Swiss, originating from 151 countries. 4,449 teachers and collaborators, of whom 49% are female, are working for UNIGE.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Student_life\" class=\"mw-headline\">Student life<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span id=\"Sports\" class=\"mw-headline\">Sports:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Bureau des sports organizes all the sports related activity at UNIGE. Free sports lessons are given everyday and it suffices to show one&#8217;s student card to access. Other lessons organization with the university&#8217;s partners demand a small fee.\u00a0UNIGE is home to the Geneva university championships in basketball, indoor football, rowing, badminton, outdoor football.<sup id=\"cite_ref-45\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The university also sends teams to the Swiss university championship in badminton, indoor football, skiing, basketball, fencing, football, golf, ice-hockey, table tennis and volleyball.\u00a0UNIGE also provides special schedules for students wishing to pursue their high level sporting career and to study at the same time.<\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Associations\" class=\"mw-headline\">Associations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alumni UNIGE is the alumni association of the University of Geneva, it offers a network of several thousand people to its members, as well as other advantages, such as discount prizes, special events, access to the official networking platform.<sup id=\"cite_ref-48\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Atout-lettres\u00a0is the alumni association of the literature students of the University, founded in 1997.
