The roots of the university can be traced back to 1580, when the notable Jesuit\u00a0Peter Canisius\u00a0founded the\u00a0Coll\u00e8ge Saint-Michel\u00a0in the City of\u00a0Fribourg.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0In 1763, an Academy of law was founded by the state of Fribourg which formed the nucleus of the present Law Faculty.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The University of Fribourg was finally created in 1889 by an Act of the parliament of the Swiss\u00a0Canton of Fribourg.<sup id=\"cite_ref-handbook_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Fribourg_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The University of Fribourg is Switzerland\u2019s only bilingual university and offers full curricula in both French and German, two of Switzerland&#8217;s national languages.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Students number about 10,000; there are about 200 tenured professors and 700 other academic teaching and research personnel. The Misericorde Campus, constructed between 1939\u201342, was designed by the architects Honegger and Dumas, students of Swiss architect\u00a0Le Corbusier.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-handbook_5-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>There are five\u00a0faculties:\u00a0Catholic theology,\u00a0law,\u00a0natural sciences,\u00a0humanities, and\u00a0economics\u00a0and\u00a0social sciences.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Fribourg_6-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10604\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10604\" style=\"width: 454px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agence-de-traduction.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/University-of-Fribourg.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-10604\" src=\"https:\/\/agence-de-traduction.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/University-of-Fribourg.jpg\" alt=\"University of Fribourg\" width=\"454\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agence-de-traduction.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/University-of-Fribourg.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/agence-de-traduction.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/University-of-Fribourg-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agence-de-traduction.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/University-of-Fribourg-768x549.jpg 768w, https:\/\/agence-de-traduction.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/University-of-Fribourg-1024x731.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10604\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">University of Fribourg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Faculties:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0Faculty of Humanities\u00a0is the largest faculty with about 4,000 students. They follow courses and seminars in the fields of philosophy, historical sciences, languages, literature, education, psychology or social sciences.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0Faculty of Law\u00a0has about 1,900 students. The program includes national and international law; both subjects areas can be followed bilingual.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0Faculty of Theology\u00a0is the largest and the most international of Switzerland, and, with Lucerne, it is the only state university in Switzerland to have a Faculty of Catholic Theology.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Approximately 1,900 students are enrolled in one of the four Bachelor programmes and one of the seven Master programmes of the\u00a0Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. The faculty is composed of four departments: business management, economics, computer science, media and communication. In addition, the\u00a0international institute of management in technology (iimt)\u00a0and the\u00a0Verbandsmanagement Institute (VMI)\u00a0are attached to the Faculty.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The\u00a0Faculty of Science\u00a0was founded in 1896 and has seven departments: biology, chemistry, geosciences, computer science, mathematics, medicine and physics. The Faculty is composed of 14 fields: biochemistry, biology, chemistry, geography, computer science, human medicine and dentistry (Bachelor), mathematics, neuroscience, pharmacy, physics, biomedical sciences, environmental sciences, earth sciences (geology) and sport.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span id=\"Traditions\" class=\"mw-headline\">Traditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dies Academicus &#8211; On this day in November every year, no lectures are held. Festivities begin with Mass in the Chapel of the Coll\u00e8ge St. Michel. The members of the University then proceed to the Aula Magna (Great Hall) in solemn procession. After an address by the rector and a prominent guest speaker, honorary degrees are awarded. The student guilds attend in ceremonial dress including swords.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Day of Welcomes (Jour D\u2019Accueil) &#8211; Similar to Freshers\u2019 Week in anglophone universities. New students are invited to the Aula Magna, where they are welcomed to Fribourg by the Rector and the Syndic (Mayor of the City of Fribourg).
